Lufkin ISD — Lufkin Middle School
Architect: GLS – Architecture & Engineering
This project transformed an aging middle school campus rife with security issues and disoriented buildings to a safe and inspiring connected environment where students can thrive academically and socially. Through a meticulous three-phase renovation and expansion, ensuring uninterrupted education for 1,800 students, the project was completed on time and under budget. Spanning 216,000 square feet of new construction and 87,000 square feet of renovations, the revitalized facility now unites modern classrooms and state-of-the-art extracurricular spaces under one roof. With enhanced security measures resolving all previous concerns, students, parents, and faculty can trust in a safe and optimal learning environment. Beyond serving students, the facility now hosts a variety of community events, making the campus a vibrant hub for all residents.
Design
“The transformation of the 1950s middle school campus, originally a patchwork of 16 buildings and eight portables, reflects design excellence driven by educational goals and safety. In the existing campus, students and staff were forced to navigate long, exposed walkways with leaking canopies in order to move about the fragmented buildings. Eliminating security vulnerabilities was the main focus of the design. The resulting 309,600 square-foot facility unified students and staff under one roof and enhanced student learning through thoughtful site development. Phased construction ensured uninterrupted education during the 228,300 square-foot new build and 81,300 square-foot renovations.
Spacious corridors throughout the design ensure smooth transitions, with state-of-the-art security systems resolving past vulnerabilities. The multi-level site provides additional room for students while connecting spaces seamlessly and securely. All types of student needs were considered in the design. A large Special Education Center is centrally located with a designated outdoor entrance for optimal accessibility. In a separate area, a dedicated 6th-grade academy creates a nurturing environment for younger learners, easing their transition into middle school. Flexible classrooms adapt to diverse teaching styles and spaces were created to give teachers multiple options to communicate curriculum such as outdoor classrooms, college style lecture hall rooms and discovery lab spaces. The modernized media center empowers students with resources for technology and research and gives comfortable spaces for collaboration.
Four retained buildings were renovated to match the new aesthetic, using modern materials alongside existing brick to blend history with innovation. The design also gives priority to creating a cohesive campus identity with vibrant school colors and branding, absent in the old campus, to boost engagement and school pride. The well-planned design delivered an inspiring facility that is a secure and safe place for students to thrive.”
Value
“This middle school transformation of a 1950s campus consolidated 16 separate buildings and eight portable buildings into a single 309,600 square-foot facility. The design and process prioritized cost-effective, durable solutions, optimizing long-term value while elevating the student learning experience and safety.
Efficiency soared by unifying the campus under one roof, eliminating long, exposed student treks and reducing operational costs tied to maintaining multiple buildings. The $169 per square-foot construction cost balanced quality and affordability and was achieved by alternative design choices, like reusing four buildings instead of full demolition. Strategic decisions like this saved costs and preserved historical character, while calculated material selections reduced maintenance needs and delivered a future-ready campus.
The four reused buildings were integrated into the design, their brick exteriors harmonized with modern, low-maintenance materials like high-performance glazing and durable flooring, reducing life cycle costs and preserving district funds. The exposed building structure, incorporated as a design feature, minimized finishing expenses while creating an aesthetic that inspires pride and nostalgia in the community.
Many cost obstacles were overcome throughout this project including building material price increases due to COVID impacts and supply chain issues that influenced prices, yet the shocking $169 per square-foot cost was achieved through the relentless dedication of District staff and firm team members.”

Community
“The middle school’s transformation from a fragmented campus into a unified facility reflects and embraces the community’s diverse culture, identity and future goals. Located in the heart of town, this campus is well known throughout the community. Once a vibrant hub for community gatherings, the aging facility and fragmented campus were no longer a safe and accessible place for large groups.
The new design integrates the community’s diversity through inclusive spaces that welcome all. Drastic exterior renovations and beautiful finishes have made the campus a recognizable landmark and source of community pride. Flexible, multi-purpose spaces host community events, drawing diverse groups together. These events, absent in the old campus due to space limitations, strengthen community ties and celebrate shared values. By hosting town halls, performances and sporting events, the campus serves as a community anchor, reinforcing its importance as a place of learning and connection. This project has revitalized a vibrant hub that is now accessible to everyone and fosters belonging while celebrating local school pride.”

School Transformation
“This project transformed an aging middle school campus rife with security issues and disoriented buildings to a safe and inspiring connected environment where students can thrive academically and socially. The existing campus was a 1950s patchwork of 16 buildings and eight portables that caused innumerable security vulnerabilities. Students and staff were forced to navigate long, exposed walkways with leaking canopies in order to move about the fragmented campus. Transitions between the scattered buildings also took students a long time and decreased engagement in the classroom.
In shape and form, the unified campus eliminates fragmented navigation, with wide hallways ensuring smooth, safe transitions for 1,800 students in a timely manner. The multi-level facility has a cohesive layout with a seamless, modern aesthetic. Four retained buildings were renovated and wrapped into the new project leaving exposed building structures that add a special character and make spaces feel vibrant and purposeful. Security was enhanced in the new facility by gathering everyone under one roof and eliminating long treks in exposed environments.
The character of the facility, infused with vibrant school colors absent in the old campus, fosters pride and belonging, motivating students and staff. This branding transforms the campus into a cultural hub, reinforcing its educational purpose. Drastic exterior renovations and beautiful finishes have made the campus a recognizable landmark and source of community pride.
Overall, this project delivered an inspiring, secure, and adaptable environment that will shape educational excellence for generations.”
