Leonard ISD—Leonard Elementary School
Architect: WRA Architects
Nestled among the rolling hills of North Texas, Leonard, TX—population 2,505—is a community where relationships shape learning, and schools are the heart of daily life. Along the red brick streets of the downtown square, generations have grown up supported by neighbors, guided by educators, and connected through shared experiences. The original Leonard Elementary School, built in 1953, stood as a cornerstone of that identity for generations, a place where families grew, memories were made, and community bonds were forged in the classrooms.
In 2022, Leonard ISD recognized that honoring that legacy meant building something worthy of its future. The district brought a bond election to voters in 2022, one that asked for a significant act of collective faith. Before a single vote was cast, the community began its work. Residents attended town halls, spoke with neighbors, and organized grassroots efforts to spread the word about what this bond would mean for the children of Leonard and for the future of the town.
The community answered, delivering a resounding 60% approval. The vote was more than a financial decision; it was a declaration that the students of Leonard deserved a school that matched the town’s ambition for them. The result is a new two-story, 74,000-square-foot campus serving Pre-K through fifth grade, designed to meet today’s needs while also anticipating tomorrow’s growth. Situated on 20 acres of undeveloped land, the school was designed with both the present and future in mind—built to serve a core capacity of 530 students with the flexibility to accommodate up to 630 as the community continues to grow.
Leonard Elementary’s design is rooted in community and exploration, drawing inspiration from both its people and place. Shared learning environments—conceptualized as “The Neighborhood”—foster connection, collaboration, and a strong sense of belonging among students. “The Backyard” reflects Leonard’s defining natural landscape, incorporating elements inspired by rolling hills, open skies, and agricultural surroundings to create a calming, nature-connected experience. Anchoring the design, “The Square” pays homage to the town’s historic center through tactile materials, textured tiles, and intentional brick patterns that invite exploration and sensory engagement. Together, these elements create a cohesive environment that celebrates local identity while supporting student growth, creativity, and community connection.
Perhaps no moment captures the heart of this project more than the day the playground was built. Where most campuses hire contractors for the job, Leonard’s community members rolled up their sleeves and built it themselves. Having championed the bond from the very beginning, they wanted to show ownership and leave their handprints for the next generation. That act of collective service, neighbors working side-by-side for their children, is the heart of what Leonard Elementary represents.
Design
The design team and district engaged the community through a series of meetings, listening carefully to their needs and priorities. Three key pillars emerged from those conversations. The Neighborhood: Shared learning environments invite students to experience the joy of community gathering and to connect with their peers as they learn, create, and grow together. The Backyard: The natural landscape that defines life in Leonard – rolling hills, open skies, agricultural land, and nature-inspired motifs – shapes the character of the design. The Square: A tribute to Leonard’s Town Square – with textured tiles, tactile signage, and deliberate brick patterning – invites students to explore and engage.
Value
Construction was guided by a disciplined approach, achieving approximately $2.1 million in savings while ensuring every dollar supported the core educational mission. Materials and finishes were selected for high performance and design integrity, enabling efficient installation and cost savings without compromising aesthetics or functionality. The community’s bond investment returned as a community hub, a place where connection is built into every corner, and the spirit of Leonard grows with every child.
Wellness
The design team researched color theory to create a space for comfort, curiosity, and belonging.Color is used intentionally to organize space, support developmentally appropriate learning, and guide wayfinding, reinforced by nature-inspired imagery of butterflies, sunflowers, water, and clouds. Tactile surfaces, natural tones, and regionally inspired details support sensory wellness alongside visual comfort, creating an inclusive, nurturing environment where every student feels seen, supported, and at home.
Community
Connection is a way of life in Leonard. For generations, this tight-knit community has been defined by neighbors showing up for one another, a spirit carried through every phase of the project. Leonard Elementary was designed to be a true community hub where doors open wide for everyone. Families, neighbors, and students gather here for the moments that define shared life. This school belongs to everyone who helped build it and every child who will learn and grow within its walls.
Planning
Leonard ISD and the Bond Planning Committee met to identify priorities, expressing a desire for a space to gather and grow for generations. They agreed their students deserved a new learning environment. The Committee knew passage would be challenging, requiring voter approval for a significant act of collective faith. The community showed dedicated support, recognizing the bond’s long-term value and rallying to encourage approval.
School Transformation
For more than seven decades, Leonard Elementary has stood as the heart of this community. Moving forward meant honoring what came before. The new school is a deliberate act of stewardship, built for the next seventy years and beyond, offering contemporary learning environments, flexible spaces, and outdoor learning opportunities. For Leonard, this building is a visible marker of what this town achieves together. The old school shaped the Leonard community. The new school declares who Leonard intends to become.
