Tyler ISD\u2014Early College High School
\nArchitect: Corgan<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Tyler ISD’s Early College High School, sited adjacent to their Career & Technology Center, creates synergy between skilled trade and professional programs. Designed to elevate the student experience, the school encourages mentorship and real-world connections while prioritizing indoor and outdoor learning spaces for socialization and collaborative study. The new program bridges into the collegiate atmosphere with specific design goals focused on post-secondary career preparation and credentials, advancing academic outcomes, and promoting a spirit of place and connection to mentors and peers.<\/p>\n

\"Design\u2014StarDesign<\/strong><\/p>\n

Aligning design with the rigorous academic program at Tyler Early College High School, students are immersed in an elevated environment with a collegiate atmosphere. Varied common areas provide adaptable student-led learning opportunities through flexible furniture and integrated technology. Drawing inspiration from the Piney Woods of East Texas, biophilic patterns utilized in paneling and canopies in the courtyard reflect the surrounding ecoregion. A sophisticated, natural palette and visual connections to nature provide a grounded aesthetic with layered patterns and ample natural light.<\/p>\n

\"Value\u2014StarValue<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sited next to Tyler ISD\u2019s Career and Technology Education Center (CTC), the Early College High School and the CTC share amenities, creating a campus feel and encouraging connections. The new, secure outdoor quad not only serves as a bridge between the two campuses but also provides a shared gathering space that extends indoors into the Commons. Students from both campuses benefit from an on-site kitchen and a spacious, daylight-filled multi-use dining and gathering space. With a focus on safety and durability, thoughtful materials and construction methods maximized the budget while complementing the adjacent CTC.<\/p>\n

\"Wellness\u2014StarWellness<\/strong><\/p>\n

Aesthetic and functional connections to the surrounding natural environment integrate the restorative benefits of nature, balancing high academic demands. The outdoor quad serves as a place to restore, collaborate, connect, as well as offer moments of respite for students and faculty. Daylight, views, patterns, soft green tones, and natural materials provide a soothing atmosphere. While maximizing daylight in most educational spaces, the design team also leveraged a soft green paint in classrooms due to its calming and soothing effects, linked to stress and anxiety reduction. Students are offered choice in flexible, posture-focused furnishings, supporting their developmental needs for connection, interaction, and independence. Ergonomic solutions, like perching chairs, offer comfort for both teachers and students.<\/p>\n

Community<\/strong><\/p>\n

The new Early College High School (ECHS) complements the existing Tyler Career and Technical Center (CTC) on the same site, creating a cohesive collegiate-feeling campus. Celebrating Tyler ISD\u2019s strong culture of learning and community pride, the ECHS facilitates community gatherings in the multi-use commons, including a large learning stair and direct connection to the outdoor learning space for large community events. The elevated, local ecoregion-inspired design and integrated graphics take inspiration from the surrounding Piney Woods. Through partnerships with local colleges, the ECHS emphasizes and provides pathways to regional universities, inspiring a culture of growth and encouraging students to work toward advanced education and career opportunities in the region.<\/p>\n

Planning<\/strong><\/p>\n

Driven by a vision to create a future-focused educational environment, the Early College High School (ECHS) embodies a collegiate atmosphere and a strong sense of place. This vision, developed in collaboration with the community, aimed to elevate the educational experience for its students. Recently ranked the #1 high school in East Texas, ECHS was planned to emulate a collegiate environment and prepare students for the next chapter. The design expands upon the certification programs offered by the adjacent Tyler Career and Technology Center (CTC), providing access to higher education to give students the opportunity to accelerate their learning goals, promoting socialization, and building connections.<\/p>\n

\"Transformation\u2014StarSchool Transformation<\/strong><\/p>\n

Previously housed in an aged elementary school building, the new Early College High School brings students into an aspirational, elevated community of learning with opportunities for personal growth and educational advancement. This focused environment fosters ownership and belonging for a diverse student body coming from across the district, instilling a shared sense of place and identity. The modern learning environment supports collaborative, interactive learning for various group sizes and learning needs.<\/p>\n
