Stantec

Design

How can a district stadium serving five teams express individual identity and pride while creating equal and engaging opportunities for each visitor? Thorne Stadium responds to that question through strategic customization and immersive graphics uniquely tuned to each team’s identity, paired with intentionally designed experiences for every visitor.

This new stadium replaces the previous berm-style venue, which closed in 2022 due to structural, plumbing, and accessibility issues. Its replacement created an opportunity to address these deficiencies while reimagining access and experience. The design removes half of the berm to introduce fully ADA-compliant routes, increase seating capacity, and improve sightlines across the bowl.

With the goal of creating a premier district venue and a shared source of pride, the stadium elevates the experience for teams, performers, and spectators while extending its use through community spaces.

Team and Performer Experience
The local-team customization begins the moment visitors arrive. Metal, reflective panels with integrated LED lighting shift to reflect each school’s identity, from the deep blue of Nimitz High School to the bold red of MacArthur High School. Similar lighting lines the hype tunnel, while large-scale graphics rooted in Aldine ISD’s history reinforce a shared legacy. Aspirational messaging such as “Make History” builds energy in the tunnel and locker rooms, connecting past achievements to future potential.

Dedicated locker rooms and taping areas support athlete preparation, providing spaces for recovery and team culture. These back-of-house environments extend the same identity-driven experience found on the concourse into spaces unseen by spectators.

Behind the home team’s end zone, Pop Warner athletes gather in additional seating and a turfed standing area, reinforcing a clear pathway from youth programs to high school athletics. Dedicated band seating, a separate circulation path removed from spectator routes, and an outdoor band plaza for practice ensure each group has space designed around its needs.

Spectators and Operations Experience
The 10,000-seat stadium features generous concourses, improved concessions, and expanded restrooms to reduce congestion and improve comfort, while intuitive wayfinding and sightlines support safer crowd movement. The two-level, glass-enclosed press box is organized for efficient operations, housing production, coaching, media, and timing functions on the working level, with flexible hospitality suites above.

A highlight moment is never missed, with technology seamlessly embedded into the architecture through a 25’ x 75’ video display and ribbon boards that deliver consistent coverage throughout the venue. The stadium’s surround sound system also delivers a concert-like experience. Unlike traditional directional sound systems located at scoreboards, W.W. Thorne Stadium employs a distributed sound system featuring smaller speakers around the entire facility. This setup minimizes reverberation to ensure every spectator enjoys a crystal-clear auditory experience, regardless of their location within the stadium.

Community Access and Flexible Use
Outside of game day, a large community room with expansive windows overlooks the field, creating a direct visual connection to the stadium while supporting banquets, meetings, training sessions, and community events. This flexible space extends the life of the facility and reinforces its role as a year-round community asset.

Value

From game day to community events and banquets, Thorne Stadium’s value is realized through its ability to operate efficiently and adapt to multiple uses, strengthening district pride while maximizing long-term return on investment.

Materials, Reuse, and Cost Control
The project leverages the existing site and infrastructure to reduce initial costs and long-term maintenance demands. Portions of the original stadium’s berm were preserved, minimizing earthwork while informing the new bowl configuration and maintaining a direct connection to the stadium’s previous construction. A similar, durable material palette further establishes this continuity.

Existing utilities—including domestic water, stormwater, gas, and sanitary systems—were reused where possible, along with parking and site infrastructure, limiting the need for new construction and reducing lifecycle costs. The design also builds onto the adjoining arena, renovating and integrating existing locker rooms to serve both facilities and eliminate redundant program space.

These decisions align material selection, construction methods, and site strategy to prioritize efficiency, adaptability, and responsible stewardship of district resources.

A More Efficient Game Day Experience
Prior to the new stadium, Friday night events required extensive coordination, and following the 2022 closure, the district relied on neighboring facilities to meet demand. The replacement stadium delivers a high-performing venue that reduces logistical complexity and operational strain.

Clear circulation separates teams, performers, and spectators to improve safety while allowing simultaneous operations without conflict. Expanded concourses, upgraded concessions, and additional restrooms reduce congestion and shorten wait times, enhancing the experience while lowering staffing demands. Integrated technology, including a large-format video display, ribbon boards, and a distributed sound system, supports streamlined event production and enables student-led broadcasting.

These strategies transform game day from a resource-intensive effort into a coordinated, efficient operation the district can manage with consistency and confidence.

Serving Five Districts
As the shared home for five high schools, the design balances customization with adaptability. Programmable lighting, interchangeable graphics, and divisible team spaces create distinct environments for each school without duplicating infrastructure. This approach reduces redundancy while maintaining strong individual identity, allowing the facility to flex seamlessly between users.

Community Access and Extended Use
A large community room, with capacity for approximately 400 and the ability to subdivide, supports board meetings, trainings, banquets, and community events. A serving kitchen, integrated technology, and direct views to the field enable a wide range of functions without additional setup or equipment. The building also houses district athletic offices, consolidating operations within a single, accessible location.

The two-level press box further expands functionality by pairing operational spaces below with flexible hospitality suites above that can support district partners and potential revenue-generating events.

Wellness

W.W. Thorne Stadium is intentionally designed to promote mental and physical wellbeing for athletes, staff, and spectators through material choices, dedicated recovery spaces, inclusive planning, and clear, safe environments.

Comfort and Equity
Spaces that support preparation and recovery are designed with comfort, dignity, and equity in mind. Located within the adjoining M.O. Campbell Center, air-conditioned locker rooms and officials’ areas use warm wood materials to soften enclosed, windowless environments, creating a more calming and restorative atmosphere for pre- and post-game routines. This approach elevates spaces that are often overlooked, improving both physical comfort and mental readiness.

Equity is reinforced through intentional planning. Dedicated locker rooms for male and female officials, along with separate taping and training rooms, allow trainers to work efficiently without encroaching on team spaces. These decisions improve privacy and functionality while establishing a more inclusive standard for all users. Consistent access to comparable amenities, clear circulation, and proximity to support spaces ensure that athletes, officials, and staff experience the facility with equal consideration.

Access to light and visual connection further supports wellbeing. Taping areas maintain direct views to the field, reinforcing engagement while introducing daylight into back-of-house spaces. Above, the two-level press box uses fritted glass to reduce heat gain while bringing in consistent natural light, improving visual comfort for operational and community uses.

Safety and Visibility
Safety strategies are integrated seamlessly into the design to create an environment that feels secure and welcoming. Clear sightlines across the stadium improve visibility and situational awareness, while open circulation paths, perforated stairs, and transparent connections between levels reduce hidden or confined areas and enhance passive supervision.

Entry is streamlined through non-intrusive security measures, including metal detectors that allow efficient screening without creating barriers or congestion. Dedicated first responder and ambulance access directly to the field ensures rapid emergency response beyond traditional access points.

These strategies reduce operational strain and maintain a high level of safety, allowing athletes, staff, and spectators to remain focused on the event and the experience.

Establishing a Sense of Belonging
Dedicated spaces for Pop Warner athletes, including seating and gathering areas, create a visible pathway from youth programs to high school athletics, reinforcing a sense of progression and inclusion. District initiatives, such as attendance-based ticket incentives, further expand access and encourage participation, ensuring more students can take part in game day traditions and feel connected to the larger school community.

Community

As the shared home for five high schools, W.W. Thorne Stadium is conceived as a district-wide gathering place that reflects the diversity and collective identity of Aldine ISD. Centrally located among the five campuses, the stadium ensures equitable access for each school.

An Identity Rooted in Shared Experience
The stadium balances individual expression with a cohesive district identity. Metal, reflective panels with integrated LED lighting shift to reflect each school’s identity, from the deep blue of Nimitz High School to the bold red of MacArthur High School. Similar lighting extends into the hype tunnel, while large-scale graphics rooted in Aldine ISD’s history reinforce a shared legacy. Aspirational messaging such as “Make History” builds energy in the tunnel and locker rooms, connecting past achievements to future potential.

Dedicated locker rooms and taping areas support athlete preparation, providing spaces for performance, recovery, and team culture. These back-of-house environments extend the same identity-driven approach found on the concourse into spaces unseen by spectators. This level of investment is carried through to all users, with the visitor team welcomed through a similarly designed entry sequence that reflects the same energy and quality of experience.

Designed for Wide Student Participation
Spaces throughout the stadium are intentionally designed to support a diverse range of participants—football players, band members, dance teams, cheerleaders, ROTC, student media, and youth programs—ensuring visibility and inclusion across the full spectrum of student life.

Dedicated areas for Pop Warner athletes create a clear pathway into district programs, reinforcing a sense of progression and belonging. District initiatives, such as attendance-based ticket incentives, further expand access and participation, allowing more students to engage in game day traditions and feel part of the larger school community.

A Community Resource
Located to the north of the stadium, a dedicated community building extends the facility’s impact beyond athletics, housing a large, flexible community room, district athletic offices, and support spaces that serve both athletics and broader community needs. The divisible community room accommodates banquets, meetings, trainings, and local events, while direct views to the field maintain a visual connection to the energy of the stadium.

Back-of-house spaces further reinforce this shared use. Locker rooms and support areas within the adjoining arena are designed to accommodate both football operations and indoor events such as basketball, maximizing flexibility while maintaining consistent quality across programs. Expanded parking supports large game day crowds while also enabling major events such as graduations at the adjacent M.O. Campbell Center.

These strategies position W.W. Thorne Stadium as a community-wide resource that reflects the scale, diversity, and aspirations of Aldine ISD, creating a place where students, families, and residents feel connected and part of a shared identity.

Planning

Planning for W.W. Thorne Stadium was driven by the district’s goal to create a premier venue that elevates both student experience and operational performance. This vision is realized through a collegiate-inspired design with intuitive circulation, clear operational zoning, and coordinated user pathways that enhance safety, reduce logistical complexity, and create a stronger sense of occasion for students, performers, and spectators.

From food service and transportation to security and staffing, operational needs were integrated early in the process, resulting in a facility that performs efficiently while delivering a high-quality experience for the district.

An Expedited Process and Continued Support
Thorne Stadium was one of the first projects initiated by Aldine ISD following a COVID-related slowdown, requiring an accelerated response to meet immediate community needs. The team completed design and construction documentation in just six months, advancing without value engineering or redesign due to strong early alignment between stakeholders, design intent, and budget.

Construction was completed in 18 months through close coordination with the contractor, enabling the district to host the 2024 season opener at its home stadium. This level of alignment continued during the inaugural football season, with a member of the design team attending every game to support operations and resolve issues in real time with minimal disruption to athletes and spectators.

Meticulously Planned Pathways
A central planning driver was the deliberate separation and coordination of user groups to support safety and performance. From arrival through departure, circulation is intuitive, legible, and purposeful. Public, team, and performer pathways are clearly defined, reducing conflict points while ensuring efficient movement during peak attendance.

Athletes arrive through a dedicated bus tunnel, moving directly into locker rooms and adjacent training spaces, with visual connections to the field that reinforce a game-ready mindset. Pre-game circulation culminates in a dedicated “hype tunnel” featuring district moments and graphics that build anticipation before teams enter the field. At halftime, locker rooms are designed for flexible use, allowing separation of offense and defence for focused coaching.

Fine arts participants, including band and dance teams, are supported through a separate bus loop and dedicated dressing areas that accommodate performance preparation and transitions. These spaces are positioned to connect directly to field access points, enabling coordinated halftime performances without disrupting game operations.

The spectator experience is equally considered. Expanded parking and clearly defined entry points distinguish home and visitor arrival, while branded elements establish a strong sense of identity. In response to pandemic-era shifts, traditional ticketing areas were reconfigured to support mobile-first operations, incorporating guest services functions such as digital ticket assistance, staff check-in, and device charging. Vertical circulation—including stairs, concourses, and elevators—supports efficient movement between seating levels, from the lower bowl to premium viewing areas and the press box.

While this experience feels seamless to users, it is the result of deliberate planning, close stakeholder coordination, and early alignment between operations and design. Every pathway, space, and sequence was tested against real-world event scenarios to ensure the facility performs as intended on game day and other community events.”

Every pathway, space, and sequence was tested against real-world event scenarios to ensure the facility performs as intended on game day and other community events.

School Transformation

Transformation is evident in the project’s shift from a constrained, aging facility to a benchmark venue that expands access, raises expectations, and inspires student pride while improving performance and participation.

Before: The 1960s Stadium
As the original stadium closed in 2022 due to structural, plumbing, and accessibility issues, Aldine ISD teams were displaced to a neighboring facility for two seasons, limiting a true sense of ownership and home-field identity.

The stadium embedded its concourse within a large berm, with access provided only by a long ramp, restricting circulation and preventing ADA-compliant access to seating. The undersized press box further limited functionality, lacking adequate space for judges, referees, and coaches to effectively observe and support field events.

After: The W.W. Thorne Stadium Replacement
Driven by the district’s goal of creating a premier venue, the design reimagines arrival and access to elevate experience and performance. Half of the existing berm is strategically removed to introduce fully ADA-compliant circulation, increase seating capacity, and improve sightlines across the bowl, transforming how spectators enter, move through, and engage with the stadium from the moment they arrive.

As the stadium fills, circulation is direct and legible, with visible entry points and vertical connections that support movement between the lower bowl, upper seating, and premium areas. Concourses and merchandise areas encourage engagement, while a reimagined press box provides multi-level space for premium viewing, judging, and game operations.

Behind the scenes, athletes and performers benefit from a more focused, performance-driven environment. Dedicated pathways separate team and public circulation, improving safety and efficiency while reinforcing a game-ready mindset. Pre-game movement culminates in a hype tunnel featuring district graphics and moments that build anticipation and motivate performance. At halftime, locker rooms flex to support separation of offense and defense, creating conditions for more effective coaching and preparation.

Fine arts participants, including band and dance teams, are supported through a separate arrival sequence, dedicated dressing areas, and direct field access, enabling coordinated performances without disrupting game operations. Integrated lighting, sound, and video systems transform the venue into a high-energy environment that reinforces identity, pride, and belonging across Aldine ISD.

This replacement resolves longstanding constraints in access, circulation, and operational performance while introducing inclusive accommodations, elevated amenities, and production capabilities aligned with collegiate and professional venues. Here, students engage in hands-on roles in media, technology, and event operations; programs gain a visible platform for performance; and the stadium creates an environment that inspires pride, motivates participation, and transforms how students experience athletics, arts, and community events.

Star of Distinction Category Winner

Aldine ISD W.W Thorne Stadium Architect: Stantec Design How can a district stadium serving five teams express individual identity and pride while creating equal and engaging opportunities for each visitor?
