Parkhill

Art Briles Stadium is a new 32,012-square-foot athletic facility for Stephenville ISD designed as a dedicated home for district athletics and community events. The stadium accommodates more than 7,700 spectators and includes synthetic turf, LED sports lighting, a multi-level press box, locker rooms, concessions, dedicated home/visitor/band seating, and more than 1,700 parking spaces.

Design

“Art Briles Stadium was designed to create an exceptional experience for students, performers, spectators, and the broader Stephenville community. Rather than functioning solely as an athletic venue, the facility was conceived as a flexible environment that supports learning, performance, competition, and community engagement while remaining accessible and welcoming to all users.

A primary design goal was to create a stadium experience that could be enjoyed by every member of the community. The design leverages existing site topography to improve accessibility and enhance spectator comfort throughout the facility. Two primary terrace levels provide diverse viewing opportunities, including a fully ADA-accessible upper terrace connected directly to the main concourse and press box level. This innovative approach allows spectators—including elderly community members and those with mobility challenges—to access premium viewing areas without navigating stairs, reinforcing the district’s commitment to inclusion and universal access.

The organization of the stadium was carefully planned to support multiple user groups simultaneously. Clear circulation paths provide safe and efficient movement for athletes, performers, staff, and spectators during high-attendance events. Dedicated marching band seating was intentionally positioned to optimize performance visibility, sound projection, and connection to the field, ensuring that fine arts programs remain an integral part of the game-day experience rather than an afterthought.

Beyond athletics, the facility extends the educational environment through spaces that support student engagement and real-world learning. Dedicated broadcasting and production areas provide opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience in communications, media production, and event management. Athletic training and support spaces enhance student wellness while supporting learning opportunities related to sports medicine and performance science.

The stadium was also designed for flexibility and long-term relevance. Home and visitor locker rooms, concessions, a spirit store, and operational support spaces accommodate a variety of activities throughout the year. The facility seamlessly transitions between football and soccer competitions, band performances, graduations, ceremonies, and community events, maximizing utilization while serving a broad range of district programs.

Material selections and architectural elements were chosen to reinforce Stephenville ISD’s identity while providing durability and long-term performance. Extensive site and drainage planning further support the facility’s resilience, ensuring safe and reliable operation during a variety of weather conditions.

The result is a stadium that balances accessibility, functionality, flexibility, and educational opportunity. Through thoughtful design, Art Briles Stadium creates an environment where students can perform, compete, learn, and lead while providing a welcoming destination for the entire Stephenville community.”

Value

“Art Briles Stadium was delivered with a clear focus on maximizing long-term value for Stephenville ISD through responsible stewardship of public resources, operational efficiency, and lifecycle performance. From project inception through completion, the district, design team, and contractor worked collaboratively to ensure that every decision balanced cost, durability, functionality, and long-term community benefit.

A significant contributor to the project’s success was the Design-Build delivery method. By integrating design and construction into a single collaborative process, the team was able to evaluate cost, schedule, materials, and constructability in real time. This approach transformed value engineering from a one-time exercise into a continuous decision-making process, allowing the team to optimize performance while maintaining alignment with district goals and budget expectations.

The project also leveraged phased procurement strategies to maximize efficiency and maintain schedule certainty. Construction packages were strategically sequenced to allow site and structural work to begin while design refinement continued on more complex building elements. This overlap between design and construction accelerated delivery and helped the district meet a critical operational deadline as it transitioned from the temporary use of Tarleton Stadium to its own permanent facility.

Long-term ownership costs were a central consideration throughout the project. Materials and systems were selected for durability, low maintenance requirements, and lifecycle performance. Interior and exterior building components were designed to withstand heavy community use while minimizing future maintenance demands. Equipment and operational systems were evaluated based on reliability, serviceability, and long-term operating costs to ensure sustainable performance over time.

A defining aspect of the value strategy was the direct involvement of district maintenance and operations personnel throughout design and construction. Their input influenced material selection, drainage strategies, access planning, and operational layouts, ensuring the facility could be efficiently maintained with available district resources. This collaboration resulted in practical solutions that reduce long-term labor requirements while supporting reliable facility performance.

Extensive site analysis also informed drainage and stormwater management strategies that protect the facility while remaining manageable for district staff. These investments help reduce long-term risk, preserve infrastructure, and control future maintenance costs.

The stadium’s flexibility further enhances its value. By supporting football, soccer, band performances, graduations, community events, and civic celebrations within a single facility, the district maximizes utilization while reducing the need for additional specialized venues. This multi-purpose approach expands the return on investment for students, staff, and taxpayers alike.

Through integrated delivery, lifecycle-focused planning, and thoughtful operational decision-making, Art Briles Stadium demonstrates that long-term value is achieved through collaboration, adaptability, and responsible stewardship. The result is a durable, high-performing facility that will continue serving Stephenville ISD and its community for generations.”

Wellness

“Art Briles Stadium supports wellness as a holistic experience that extends beyond athletics to include physical health, emotional well-being, social connection, and inclusive participation. Designed as both an athletic venue and a community gathering place, the facility creates opportunities for students, families, and community members to engage, connect, and thrive in an environment that promotes belonging and shared experiences.

At its foundation, the stadium supports physical wellness through high-quality facilities for football, soccer, marching band, cheer, dance, and spirit programs. These activities encourage regular physical activity, teamwork, discipline, and personal growth while helping students build confidence, resilience, and leadership skills. By providing dedicated spaces for practice, competition, and performance, the facility supports healthy lifestyles and active participation across a broad range of student programs.

Student wellness is further enhanced through integrated athletic training and support spaces that promote injury prevention, recovery, and performance. These facilities provide students with access to resources that help them participate safely while also creating opportunities to explore interests related to sports medicine, health sciences, and athletic performance.

A defining wellness feature of the project is its commitment to accessibility and inclusion. The stadium was intentionally designed to welcome users of all ages and abilities, ensuring that everyone can participate fully in the experience. ADA-accessible terraces, intuitive circulation routes, and grade-connected viewing areas provide comfortable access throughout the facility. The innovative upper terrace allows spectators to enjoy premium views without navigating stairs, creating a more inclusive environment for elderly community members and individuals with mobility challenges.

The stadium also promotes social and emotional wellness by fostering meaningful connections among students, families, educators, and community members. Gathering spaces, concessions, terraces, and concourses create opportunities for interaction before, during, and after events, strengthening relationships and reinforcing a shared sense of belonging. These connections support student confidence and emotional well-being by creating visible networks of support and encouragement.

Beyond individual events, the facility contributes to community wellness by providing a welcoming destination where people come together to celebrate achievements, support one another, and create lasting memories. Graduations, performances, competitions, and community gatherings transform the stadium into a place where school and community life intersect, reinforcing the strong social connections that contribute to overall well-being.

Ultimately, Art Briles Stadium demonstrates how thoughtfully designed environments can support the whole person. By combining opportunities for physical activity, social engagement, accessibility, and community connection, the facility promotes wellness at every level while creating a place where students and community members alike feel valued, supported, and included.”

Community

“Art Briles Stadium was envisioned as more than an athletic venue. From the earliest stages of planning, Stephenville ISD sought to create a place where students, families, alumni, and community members could come together to celebrate achievement, tradition, and shared identity. The result is a civic landmark that strengthens the connection between school and community while creating a lasting sense of place for generations of Stephenville residents.

At the heart of the project is the belief that every student program contributes to the district’s story. The stadium was intentionally designed to support and celebrate a wide range of participants, including athletes, marching band members, cheerleaders, dancers, broadcasters, trainers, coaches, student leaders, and volunteers. By providing dedicated spaces and meaningful visibility for these groups, the facility reinforces that every contribution is valued and that student success takes many forms.

The stadium’s organization and amenities promote interaction, engagement, and community connection. A welcoming concourse serves as the primary gathering space, allowing families, students, and visitors to move comfortably throughout the facility while remaining connected to the event experience. Concessions, gathering areas, and a spirit store encourage social interaction and school pride, transforming events into shared community celebrations rather than isolated activities.

Accessibility was a fundamental component of the community vision. ADA-accessible seating areas, grade-connected terraces, and intuitive circulation routes ensure that visitors of all ages and abilities can fully participate in events. These design decisions are particularly meaningful in a community where generations of families have supported Stephenville schools and traditions. By removing barriers and improving access, the stadium allows longtime supporters, grandparents, alumni, and community members to remain active participants in the district’s most important moments.

The facility also serves as a year-round destination for community life. In addition to football and soccer competitions, the stadium hosts graduations, ceremonies, band performances, youth events, and civic celebrations. These gatherings create opportunities for the community to come together in support of students while reinforcing the strong relationship between Stephenville ISD and the city it serves.

Perhaps most importantly, the stadium provides a place where the entire community can celebrate student achievement. Whether cheering from the stands, performing on the field, broadcasting an event, or walking across the graduation stage, students are supported by a visible network of family, friends, educators, and community members. These shared experiences strengthen community bonds and create memories that extend far beyond any single event.

Through intentional design and inclusive programming, Art Briles Stadium has become a place where tradition, pride, and community converge. More than a venue, it is a gathering place that reflects the spirit of Stephenville and reinforces the idea that student success is a community-wide achievement.”

Planning

“The planning of Art Briles Stadium was guided by Stephenville ISD’s mission to empower learners to achieve excellence through initiative and integrity and its commitment to developing the potential of every student, every day. From the beginning, the project was envisioned as more than an athletic facility. It was planned as a district-wide asset that would support learning, performance, leadership, and community connection while reflecting the district’s core values of Growth, Integrity, Initiative, Relationships, Excellence, and Personalization.

To achieve this vision, Stephenville ISD engaged a broad group of stakeholders throughout the planning process, including district leadership, campus administrators, coaches, athletic staff, fine arts representatives, maintenance and operations personnel, students, parents, and community members. This collaborative approach ensured that the facility responded not only to athletic needs, but also to educational goals, operational priorities, and community expectations.

A key planning objective was to create opportunities for learning beyond the traditional classroom. Early programming discussions identified spaces that could support broadcasting, media production, sports medicine, leadership development, and event operations. These functions were refined throughout the planning process and integrated into the final design, creating an environment where students can develop practical skills and gain real-world experiences connected to future careers and interests.

The Design-Build delivery method strengthened the planning process by creating continuous collaboration between the district, designers, and construction team. Rather than treating planning as a separate phase, stakeholders remained actively engaged throughout design and construction. This approach allowed ideas to be evaluated in real time, ensuring that educational priorities, budget considerations, and schedule requirements remained aligned throughout the life of the project.

Planning also emphasized long-term usability and operational success. District maintenance and operations staff played a significant role in shaping decisions related to accessibility, drainage, material selection, circulation, and facility management. Their involvement ensured that the stadium would not only meet immediate needs but also remain efficient, maintainable, and adaptable for future generations of students and staff.

Community connection was another central planning consideration. The stadium was intentionally located and organized to serve as an extension of the educational campus while functioning as a welcoming civic destination. Its proximity to both the high school and junior high reinforces its role in student life, while its flexibility supports athletics, fine arts, graduations, ceremonies, and community events throughout the year.

The result is a facility that reflects the values and aspirations of the people it serves. Through collaborative planning, stakeholder engagement, and a clear focus on educational purpose, Art Briles Stadium transforms district goals into a lasting resource that supports students, strengthens community relationships, and advances Stephenville ISD’s vision for the future.”

School Transformation

“Art Briles Stadium transformed the educational and community experience of Stephenville ISD by creating something the district had never possessed before, a place to call its own. More than a new athletic venue, the facility reshaped how students, families, educators, and community members experience learning, achievement, tradition, and connection.

For generations, Stephenville students competed, performed, and celebrated important milestones in facilities that belonged to others. While the community’s traditions remained strong, the district lacked a permanent home where its identity could be fully expressed and its achievements celebrated. Art Briles Stadium changed that reality by establishing a destination where school and community life converge around a shared sense of pride and belonging.

The transformation is evident in the student experience. Today, students participate in a facility designed specifically to support their success, whether as athletes, performers, broadcasters, trainers, leaders, or graduates. Opportunities that once existed in separate settings are now brought together within a single environment where learning, performance, and participation occur side by side. Students gain access to real-world experiences through broadcasting and media production, sports medicine and athletic training, event operations, leadership opportunities, and large-scale performances that place them at the center of highly visible community events.

The project also transformed the role of extracurricular programs within the district. Marching band, cheer, dance, spirit organizations, and student leadership groups are fully integrated into the event experience, reinforcing the idea that student achievement extends far beyond the playing field. Dedicated spaces and intentional planning ensure that every program contributes to the life of the facility and shares in the recognition and support of the community.

Beyond its impact on students, the stadium transformed how the community engages with education. Graduations, ceremonies, performances, athletic competitions, and civic events now take place in a venue that belongs to Stephenville ISD. These experiences strengthen connections between students, families, educators, alumni, and residents while creating new traditions that will shape future generations.

Perhaps most significantly, the project transformed a facility need into a source of community identity. What began as the desire for a home stadium became an opportunity to create a place where students are celebrated, community relationships are strengthened, and educational milestones are shared. The stadium serves as a visible reminder that student success is not an individual accomplishment but a collective achievement supported by an entire community.

Today, Art Briles Stadium stands as a symbol of transformation—not simply because it changed where events occur, but because it changed how they are experienced. By creating a permanent home for learning, performance, and celebration, the project redefined what school and community can achieve together.”

Star of Distinction Category Winner

Stephenville ISD—Art Briles Stadium Architect: Parkhill Art Briles Stadium is a new 32,012-square-foot athletic facility for Stephenville ISD designed as a dedicated home for district athletics and community events.
