Midlothian ISD\u2014Midlothian Heritage High School<\/strong><\/h4>\n

This project is Phase I of a new comprehensive high school. This is the 2nd high school in the district and is designed for an initial capacity of 1,000, with core facilities planned for 2,200. Starting with 9th grade only, a grade level will be added each year. Additions were planned to minimize the impact on the existing building. A unique feature is the “World-Class Cafetorium” which serves as a cafeteria, auditorium, black box theater, band practice facility and drama classroom.<\/p>\n

Community<\/strong><\/p>\n

A committee of students and staff were highly involved in the design process . Re-routing the adjacent highway increased safety around the school. The library was designed to be used by the public in the future. The exterior was designed with a timeless look to blend with the community context. The “World-Class Cafetorium” and gymnasiums are used as public venues. The main “Living Room” of the school serves as a collaboration area, meeting space, lounge, and provides building circulation.<\/p>\n

Design<\/strong><\/p>\n

In an effort to minimize cost during Phase 1, we developed a “World-Class Cafetorium” that functions as a cafeteria, auditorium, black box theatre, and drama classroom. The “Living Room” is a large central space for students to work and collaborate. The library is connected to the main entry by a large barrel vault which intersects the Living Room. The building is zoned for access to public spaces, enhancing security, without opening the entire building.<\/p>\n

A committee of students and teachers were involved in the design process . The educational mission was discussed with curriculum directors. Phase 2 additions were designed so underground utilities would not be impacted by future construction. Adjacent highway was re-routed to improve traffic flow and safety around the site. To minimize cost in Phase I, we developed a “World-Class Cafetorium” that functions as a cafeteria, auditorium, black box theatre, and drama classroom.<\/p>\n

Sustainability<\/strong><\/p>\n

A geothermal Heat Pump HVAC system creates energy savings. High-performance features include LED exterior lighting, reflective metal roof, insulated Low-E glazing, an energy management system, recycled steel, low-flow plumbing fixtures with auto controls, light-colored concrete paving, natural lighting, and local materials. All storm water is managed on-site. Artificial turf at the stadium reduces the need for irrigation. Interior finishes include recycled materials.<\/p>\n

\"Stars Value<\/strong><\/p>\n

In an effort to reduce cost and increase flexibility in Phase I, we developed a “World-Class Cafetorium” that functions as a cafeteria, auditorium, black box theatre, and drama classroom. Four teacher’s commons areas serve as workrooms and office space. This takes the teacher’s desk out of the classroom to increase classroom utilization and encourages teacher collaboration. Low-maintenance materials are used throughout. Phase 2 additions were designed so utilities would not be impacted.<\/p>\n

School Transformation<\/strong><\/p>\n

To reduce cost and increase flexibility in Phase I, we developed a “World-Class Cafetorium” that functions as a cafeteria, auditorium, black box theatre, band practice, and drama classroom. It has a flat floor for dining and side curtain to hide serving lines. Elegant wood panels acoustically shape the space. The stage includes a motorized retracting acoustic wall that can enlarge or reduce stage space as needed. A system of curtains can divide the cafeteria space into smaller venues.<\/p>\n
