2016—Carrizo Springs Junior High School

Carrizo Springs ISD—Carrizo Springs Junior High School
Architect: Claycomb Associates, Architects

This project entailed repurposing an existing high school into a state-of-the-art junior high.  In order to be good stewards, the Administration wanted to save as much of the original structure as possible.  However, portions of the foundation were compromised, creating a unique challenge.  Designers were able to save over half of the structure, incorporate 21st century learning and safety components, build in extra student capacity, and extend the life of an important community building.

The design’s primary goal was to inspire students to create and explore. To achieve this goal, the design is characterized by natural light.  Light-colored masonry and accent colors matching the District’s mascot complete the reimagined space.  Core spaces are designed for flexibility and sight line supervision.  The campus is embedded with technology for learning and student safety.  Careful attention was given to Fine Arts areas to feature student performances and encourage community use.
