2022 — Strickland Middle School

Denton ISD—Strickland Middle School
Architect: VLK Architects

This 54 year old tired and “smelly” campus experienced rejuvenation for its community. It is recognized as a place that has grown many district leaders. Inspirational stories shared by staff and students informed the design solution. Dark and gloomy became bright and happy with the transformation of outdated areas. The “dungeon” has become an inviting destination, repurposed as a modern media center. A two-story classroom addition provides additional capacity.

Design

The student-inspired design solved the outdated “dungeon” that has now become the new library, introducing natural light with an intentional connection to the floor above. Elements that define the honor of the Vikings are evidenced throughout the renovated campus, incorporating the ideas community members shared during planning. The welcoming shades of color in the exterior glass spark interest and admiration for this updated beloved school.

Value

This middle school is recognized as a breeding ground for leadership; the number of successful administrators who have served this community is remarkable. The value it provides its own district and others with the experiences it facilitates, makes it an important part of the educational vocation. It has produced pro athletes, doctors, lawyers, and other prominent professionals who are proud to say they are alumni. The retention rate of staff here is remarkable; leadership tenure is incredible.

Innovation

The student-inspired design solved the outdated “dungeon” that has now become the new library, introducing natural light with an intentional connection to the floor above. Inspirational stories shared by staff and students informed the design solution, and has become a favorite destination. No longer do students describe their new media center as “dark and gloomy” as it is now bright and happy with the transformation of outdated areas, specifically requested and inspired by students.

Community

This middle school has served its community well with the leaders it has produced over the years. This updated facility now allows for modern spaces for leadership and learning. Students and alumni recognize this school as the heart of the community it serves. It has long been the place to serve the medically fragile, as well as students of area professors. It is a beloved school and maintains staff with extremely high retention rates. Amazingly, it has produced notable professionals.

Planning

On a hot summer day, and without air conditioning, students, staff, and community gathered in the old library to share ideas and frustrations in order to design an overdue replacement middle school. The physical conditions spoke to the urgency for improvements. Perspiration provided inspiration to recall memories and articulate dreams that produced this highly valued new learning environment for students. Student-led teams created potential concepts that led to the best solution for the Vikings.

School Transformation

The “dungeon” experienced a complete revolution from the old cafeteria to an inviting destination for reading, research, and real world problem solving that now constitutes a media center. No longer a dark and dreary sunken space, the cafeteria has become one of the students’ favorite areas. The introduction of playful light and glass inspires students and welcomes them to places that can take their imaginations to new heights with open seating, space for focused lessons, and rich technology.
