2025 — Sinton High School

Sinton ISD—Sinton High School
Architect: Corgan

Replacing the existing high school on the same site, the new high school accommodates the district’s growing student population. Built in 1967, the previous high school is a beacon for the community, serving multiple generations within the tight-knit community. The existing school had several challenges, including a lack of space to grow and minimal daylight. A new school seemed a challenging task, however, Steel Dynamics, one of the United States’ top steel manufacturers, announced it was building a plant in town, creating more than 1,500 jobs. The new development allowed for the district to pass a bond, without raising community taxes, to replace the existing high school to meet the current and future needs of the district and high school. Located in a coastal climate, the school had to prioritize highly-durable materials, while also creating a welcoming sense of place. The new high school serves as a community gathering place, highlighting the heritage and school pride of the previous high school, while offering an opportunity for growth for the district.

Design—Star of DistinctionDesign

The new Sinton High School responds resiliently to the coastal climate. Replacing a campus that lacked program space and access to natural light, the design maximizes daylight, particularly in the central spine that connects the school’s enhanced learning spaces. The “wow” factor of the campus now serves as a community beacon, celebrating community identity. Bridging past generations, “Pirate Pride” is prominently displayed throughout, imparting a sense of unity and belonging.

Value—Star of DistinctionValue

Project funding was secured by leveraging tax benefits from a new steel plant (Steel Dynamics), allowing a large bond to pass without increasing property taxes. Steel Dynamics donated additional steel to the school, which resulted in additional restrooms and concessions to support the stadium, reinvesting in the community environment. Durable exterior materials were chosen to withstand the tough coastal climate, ensuring a long-term, resilient investment for the community.

Wellness

Expanded career exploration opportunities are afforded to students in Sinton High School’s new, dedicated CTE classrooms and labs. These daylight-filled spaces support students as they nurture their passions, build confidence, and develop skills that support their future aspirations. Bridging the gap to post-secondary education and local career pathways, certification programs are offered in dedicated programs. The library space provides options for students to connect or have individualized learning space.

Community

Sinton High School enhances community identity by providing the city’s largest central gathering space for diverse events. It prioritizes safety and resilience with high-impact glass for all exterior glazing, addressing the region’s extreme coastal climate. “Pirate Park” incorporates a saved terrazzo floor medallion from the former school, celebrating the school’s history and strong athletic legacy, and is open to the public.

Planning

The planning of Sinton High School prioritized maintaining full functionality of the existing school throughout construction, achieved through careful phasing plans and site strategies. The phased build-out of the Pirate Athletic Center allows for safe commencement of athletic activities ahead of the main high school construction. The design incorporates a 1,000-seat auditorium, a 1,000-seat competition gym, and large classrooms to accommodate the engaged community and projected future growth.

School Transformation

Sinton High School has been transformed from an outdated, cramped facility into a modern, spacious learning environment that inspires and motivates students and staff. Setting a new precedent for the district, the school incorporates collaborative spaces and an outdoor courtyard, significantly expanding interactive learning opportunities. The success of these areas has driven the addition of more seating. New furniture, including soft seating in flexible areas, enhances the learning experience.
