2025 — Viola Wilson Elementary School

Boerne ISD — Viola Wilson Elementary School
Architect: Pfluger Architects, Inc.

“New elementary school to address growth in the district;

Set at the edge of a growing neighborhood and tucked into the trees, this is the district’s first campus west of the highway—and the first named for a female educator who dedicated over 40 years to students and families in this community. That legacy shows up in every detail. Windows frame the trees she loved. The design follows the slope, preserving nature and reducing waste. There are no long hallways, no idle square footage—just spaces that connect, adapt, and invite students to explore.”

Design—Star of DistinctionDesign

A wooded Hill Country site set the stage for something different—and so did Viola Wilson’s legacy. Her lifelong passion for nature and education shaped a design that honors both. The campus is nestled in the land, preserving trees, and opening every space to daylight and outdoor views. Inside, colors drawn from the changing seasons root students in their surroundings. Circulation paths are open and intentional, creating moments to pause, cross paths, and connect throughout the day.

Value—Star of DistinctionValue

“Thoughtful design turned a challenging site into lasting value. The building is smaller than previous campuses, but delivers a full educational experience through smart organization and adaptable learning environments.

A compact footprint, carefully planned, gives every space purpose. Learning areas flex to support different needs throughout the day and transitions become opportunities—designed to keep students engaged as they move, connect, and settle into what comes next.”

Wellness—Star of DistinctionWellness

“Nature anchors the design, with windows framing trees, changing seasons, & inviting sunlight into every learning space. Safety is woven into the environment in ways students don’t consciously notice. Students feel secure, yet free to move, explore, and connect. Indoors and out, spaces flow naturally between focused learning, active play, and quiet moments.

Here, students find the support to be themselves & the freedom to discover who they can become.”

Community

“As the district’s first school west of the highway, creating identity & belonging was important. Designed in conversation with the surrounding neighborhood, it uses warm materials & Hill Country tones to create an immediate sense of place.

Classrooms are organized into “”wolf dens”” that strengthen student connection. Graphics featuring native wildlife & references to a beloved educator reinforce community ties. Flexible spaces support both school events & broader community use.”

Planning—Star of DistinctionPlanning

Planning for this campus was shaped by the district’s mission to engage, inspire, & enrich through innovative learning. Leaders from curriculum, technology, & facilities—alongside principals & students—defined priorities that translated into design: rethinking the library as a learning hub, improving circulation & collaboration, & removing outdated spaces that no longer support student needs. The result is a school built with intention—designed to support creativity, connection, & adaptability.

Transformation—Star of DistinctionSchool Transformation

“This school sets the tone for what comes next in a growing part of the district. Named for a local educator, the design reflects her legacy through inclusion, opportunity, & a strong connection to place. Flexible, shared spaces give students choice in how & where they learn. The district’s first two-story open-concept library doubles as circulation, connecting people & programs while framing the natural landscape.

What started here continues to shape how schools are planned & experienced.”
