San Antonio College—John L. Santikos Micronauts and Early Childhood Center
Architect: O’Connell Robertson
The 21,000-square-foot Early Childhood Center and John L. Santikos Micronaut Center bring together childcare, early childhood education, and hands-on STEAM learning in a purpose-built facility. The project includes age-specific classrooms, teaching and multipurpose spaces, secure outdoor play and learning areas, administrative and support spaces, and an immersive Micronaut environment featuring simulated space missions and interactive exhibits for young learners.

Design
Early childhood center classrooms progress from infants to Pre-K, supporting developmental milestones through age-appropriate environments, teacher visibility, and direct access to terraced landscaping with nature-based playgrounds featuring gardens, risky play, tricycle paths, and mud kitchens. Micronauts transforms STEAM-based learning into an immersive space mission, guiding Pre-K to 2nd graders through briefing, launch, exploration, and discovery to foster curiosity and hands-on engagement.
Value
Combining the Early Childhood Center and Micronauts into a centralized facility maximized value through shared systems, a reduced footprint, and efficient site utilization. Flexible learning environments support evolving educational needs, while durable materials, native landscaping, and low-maintenance systems reduce costs. The facility expands access to childcare for students, faculty, and staff, supports the training of future educators, and inspires learners through immersive experiences.
Wellness
Abundant natural light, views to nature, and direct access to outdoor learning create healthy, engaging spaces that support children’s cognitive, social, and physical development. Nature-based playgrounds, gardens, tricycle paths, and mud kitchens extend learning beyond the classroom and encourage movement, exploration, and discovery. Within Micronauts, immersive STEAM environments spark imagination, creating memorable experiences to foster curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning.
Community
Relocating the Early Childhood Center from the northern edge of campus to a central hub transformed access, visibility, and engagement while reinforcing San Antonio College’s commitment to education across generations. Affordable childcare helps faculty, first-generation and non-traditional students pursue their educational goals, while the teaching laboratory and immersive STEAM experiences foster curiosity, belonging, and lifelong connections for children, college students, and the community.
Planning
Planning was driven by SAC’s goal to remain a regional leader in early childhood education while supporting future educators. The design team engaged faculty and staff to shape classroom capacities, visibility requirements, developmental learning environments, and a STEAM-based curriculum. Research into child development and accreditation standards informed learning spaces, observation labs, and outdoor learning environments that support children, college students, and the broader community.
School Transformation
The project transforms learning by creating immersive environments that engage children through exploration, discovery, and play. At the ECC, nature-based classrooms and outdoor learning spaces support developmental growth through hands-on experiences, movement, and sensory learning. Micronauts’ carefully sequenced, STEAM-based journey from briefing to launch to space exploration sparks imagination, curiosity, and discovery while inspiring future learners through memorable experiences.
